3/21/2016 0 Comments The Last SupperThe Last Supper is reenacted in pageants around the world this time of year. And throughout the year the continuance, the remembrance, of the Last Supper is performed as often as churches decide. However, for the individual, this repetition is easy to simply become another routine, a habit, a "church" thing. But consider: Aside from the fulfillment of the Old Testament Passover, with all the meaning there, the bread represents Christ's body, which is His incarnation; His coming to earth--i.e. Christmas! The wine/fruit of the vine, represents His blood, which is His death; His sacrifice in our place--i.e. Easter! Do we get tired of Christmas? Do we get tired of Easter? The remembrance of Christ through Communion, The Eucharist, The Lord's Supper, represents the very best of these two most important Christian holidays of the year. But without the trappings. Without the distractions of gifts or guests or shopping or cooking. Even without the distraction of worrying about the people we are sitting with, or not sitting with. It is our time to celebrate what Christ has done for us and to respond in kind back to Him. It is a true holy day, starting and ending with elements. Nothing else.
So may you enjoy your next Lord's Supper with all the joy of these two annual holidays, but not in busyness; only in the pure celebration of the communion with the Savior who gave us the reason to celebrate. May "as often as you eat this bread and drink this cup" be your favorite holiday of the year, ...every time!

3/15/2016 3 Comments Just sayin'...Ran across a thought provoking Bible verse again recently: Jeremiah 2:27. "Who say to a tree, 'You are my father,' and to a stone, 'You gave me birth.'...But in the time of their trouble they will say, 'Arise and save us.' Thinking all existence is an accident, that humans, along with everything else, came from the same soup through incalculable odds, is akin to saying the same thing as the verse above. The irony is that it's God who's talking & warning that it doesn't have to be that way. Everyone has to think it through for themselves, of course, but it doesn't hurt to check what observations you're relying on in those decisions.
3/10/2016 1 Comment God's Virtual RealityDo you ever wonder if God says, "I wonder...." What makes something real to God? Since He knows everything, what does He think about? Well, in truth, the Bible shares a lot of what He thinks about and I won't try to detail any of that here, except to say that, even though God may know how something will turn out, it isn't "real" until it actually happens. When Abraham was willing to sacrifice Isaac, God responded with "now I know that you fear God, since you have not withheld your son, your only son, from Me." (Gen. 22:12). The "now I know..." is the part that gets me. Didn't God know how it would turn out? He obviously did. But it was only "head knowledge." It wasn't real until it became a real action. Likewise, God is at work to make us "more real." He isn't satisfied to let us get by with intentions without it actually changing our lives. Why do we have tests & trials? To make us real.
